Kokomo – sand, sea, radio waves

Today is World Radio Day - in commemoration of this day we interviewed the voice behind Kokomo Radio, Gypsy J.

POLOKWANE – Today is World Radio Day – in commemoration of this day we interviewed the voice behind Kokomo Radio, Gypsy J.

Jaquelene Louwrens, also known as Gypsy J, says she started Kokomo Radio, the first internet radio station in Polokwane, to give the people a voice.

She explains that the station, which runs solely online, went live on 4 January and had more than 200 listeners on its first day.

Sponsored by Aseossa, the radio station caters for listeners over 30 years old and plays music from the 60’s up to the 90’s. From 17:00, the station has live DJ’s who host afternoon drive shows which gets the listeners involved in various ways.

“We are not your usual radio station, we are for the people, giving them a voice.” Jaquelene says she was intrigued by the notion of internet radio and after working for another internet radio station and building up her confidence on air, she moved back to Polokwane and established Kokomo Radio.

“I started Kokomo because I wanted to speak to like-minded people about who they are, that is what Kokomo Radio is all about.” The name Kokomo, Jaquelene says, is a way to transport people to a different place away from all the stresses of life.

“When you think of ‘Kokomo’, you think of an island, and that is a happy place. So when you listen to our station, our aim is to take you away from all things negative.”

Win a boat cruise aboard an MSC cruiseliner with Kokomo Radio

The station, apart from their different projects and fundraisers, is having their first big competition in which one lucky listener could win a boat cruise aboard an MSC cruiseliner. The competition is going to run over the next few weeks with different games listeners have to play in order to enter. The first game had listeners sending Gypsy J a Message in a Bottle in which listeners had to send her a bottle with a photo of themselves and a motivation as to why they should win the prize. All the games are related to the station’s island theme.

The competition ends on 27 May when the winner will be announced.
