Polokwane Book Drive: help a child discover a whole new world

Thabitha Maphalle pleads with the community to donate new and old books to help a child broaden their horizon.

POLOKWANE – Reading makes you smarter, keeps you sharp as you age and reduces stress. Those that read have higher intelligence and general knowledge than those that don’t.

Polokwane Book Drive, is an organisation that enables people to donate books so others can also share in the adventures and knowledge contained between the covers.

To make a difference and make a child happy, you can donate new or old books of any language to the following places where you will find a big box: Polokwane police station, Library Gardens, Cycad Shopping Centre and Platinum Park Shopping Centre.

Thabitha Maphalle, a 21-year-old woman is the initiator of the Polokwane Book Drive

Maphalle says growing up in a family where both her parents are teachers awakened her passion for reading. She says reading became a lifestyle and not just a hobby for her.

Maphalle grew up in Seshego and later moved to Bendor where she stays with her parents and two siblings. She is a third year student at the University of Johannesburg where she studies a degree in social work.

“I fell in love with reading at a young age and I believe reading gives you the chance to explore a whole new world. Reading is the workout the brain needs in order to stay in it’s optimal health,” she says.

She further says pursuing dreams remains the most powerful path to success. Maphalle started an initiative to collect books which will be handed out to underprivileged children who can’t afford to buy books.

She says a good foundation begins when you are young and reading broadens the mind, increases vocabulary and helps with communication skills.

“The best gift you can give a child is education and a love of reading because it helps them unlock new doors. Reading enhances your vocabulary and teaches you how to use these new words correctly when constructing sentences,” she concludes.
