Cappies excel at Maths Olympiad

POLOKWANE – Capricorn High School is over the moon as two of their learners, Lebogang Ramokgopa (gr. 9) and Mosibudi Maenetja (gr. 12), recently obtained medals at the Provincial Maths Olympiad.

The Amesa Maths Olympiad was held at the University of the North on Friday. The Maths Olympiad is sponsored by the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (Amesa). The Olympiad had three stages, the first round was at school level where only the best five learners from each school progressed to the second round that was at the cluster level. The final round comprised the top 25 learners from each cluster. The two brainy learners represented the school at the provincial level and made them proud. Ramokgopa was seventh and Maenetja was tenth in the province.

“I have always been a strong student in maths, I always received excellent marks since gr. 1. I was really disappointed when they announced that I was seventh, I was expecting better, but that won’t stop me from working hard. I want to be a mathematician or scientist when I complete my studies,” says Ramokgopa.

Meanwhile Maenetja says she is not a smart maths girl, but a hard worker.

“I was astonished when my name was called for the top 10, this serves as motivation for me to work hard, I want to be a neurologist one day,” says Maenetja. The school principal, Lukas Chuene, was very proud of the learners and encouraged other learners to focus on their education.
