SMALL BUSINESS: Mealies- flavour of the week

Charles Molope (22) and Johannes Maake have opened small business enterprises along the R71 to Mankweng, where they sell cooked or raw mealies.

POLOKWANE – Becoming a street vendor selling a variety of products is one way to make a living.

Charles Molope (22) and Johannes Maake have opened small business enterprises along the R71 to Mankweng, where they sell cooked or raw mealies.

Molope started selling mealies last year and says he makes a profit, albeit a few hundred rand. He says his business only operates during the maize crop season between December and June and is considering other avenues to generate an extra income.

“I would like to become a traffic officer, but my focus is on my business for now. My advice for other young people like me is to consider starting your own business because then you can keep yourself busy and not resort to things like crime,” says Molope.

He says he is usually the busiest at the end of a month and stays at home when it rains as there is no shelter. Just a couple of metres further down the road is Maake, who also sells mealies.

He says his family has been in this line of business since the early 1990s.

“I never close shop, even in the off-season. When the maize crops are scarce, we resort to selling watermelons, which are also very popular with our customers.

“We have such stands in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. We buy our mealies and sometimes if no mealies are available locally I travel to Mpumalanga to buy stock,” says Maake.

“My late grandmother, Nelly Letsoalo, is the founder of this family venture. Her son, Peter has been running the business since her passing,” he says.

Maake is assisted by Edward Dzivhani from Venda.
