Chabane accident: Truck driver case postponed

The accused in the accident which claimed the life of Public Service and Administration minister Collins Chabane along with two of his bodyguards on Sunday, truck driver Amukelani Rikhotso briefly appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – The truck driver who was involved in the collision that claimed the lives of public service and administration minister Collins Chabane and his two bodyguards appeared before the Polokwane magistrate’s court on Tuesday after he was arrested at the scene of the accident on Sunday.

Amukelane Rikhotso (29) was charged with three counts of culpable homicide and one of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The case was postponed to April 10 for further investigation, and Rikhotso remained in custody.

Magistrate Mohammed Shaik told Rikhotso’s legal representative, Erwin Sithole, that he should consult with his client thoroughly and supply the required information before bail would be considered.

Provincial police spokesperson, Ronél Otto, said a breathalyser test at the scene of the accident showed that Rikhotso was under the influence of alcohol. A blood sample was taken, the results of which were still outstanding.

Family members and friends of Chabane attended the court case.

His nephew, Mosa Chabane, thanked the media and all the people for their support in the family’s time of bereavement and said he hoped justice would go its course so they could get closure.
