Westenburg Police Forum ready for battle

POLOKWANE – Following recent incidents of housebreaking in Westenburg, residents have decided to take action against crime in their neighbourhood with the formation of the Westenburg Police Forum (WPF) on February 17.

There are 15 WPF members under the leadership of five committee members: Allister Loubcher (chairperson), Betty Lawrance (deputy chairperson), Orpa Rogers (treasurer), Rowenda Wessels (secretary) and Giles Rogers (patrol coordinator).

The men patrol Westenburg every evening and on Friday evenings, the women help from 22:00 until midnight.

The group’s vision is No More Crime and they share a commitment of trying to make a difference in Westenburg.

WPF held several fundraisers in an effort to buy equipment needed for their patrols. With the community’s support, the WPF was able to buy whistles, torches, sjamboks and tasers.

Two weeks ago, the WPF caught a man who allegedly stole a four-year-old’s cell phone in Nagel Street.

The man was taken to the police station, a case was opened and he was arrested. He appeared before the Polokwane magistrate’s court and was released on bail.

The case was postponed for further investigation.

The members invite residents who are dedicated and willing to help fight crime in the community to join the WPF. The group meets every Tuesday at 18:00.

The group’s next fundraiser will be a Family Fun Day at the Westenburg park on March 14. The purpose of the event is to raise money to buy two-way radios.
