Graveyard robbery, vandalism grief

Vandalism and heartbreak went hand in hand at the Polokwane cemetery in Dahl Street last week.

POLOKWANE – Vandalism and heartbreak went hand in hand at the Polokwane cemetery in Dahl Street last week.

The cause was the discovery that vandals had broken and removed gravestones at several graves.

Johann Burger (60) said he visited his parents’ graves every month and was appalled by the state of some of the graves and pathways.

“Thieves and vandals break up the memories we have of our loved ones. They do not care about the feelings of others and have no respect for the dead,” Burger said.

Municipal spokesperson, Malesela Maubane, said municipal employees cleaned the cemetery regularly.

He said the cemetery was closed at night and because the walls were not very high, vandals, thieves and homeless people were able to gain access to the cemetery easily.

“We urge people to report vandalism to the municipality as soon as they become aware of it,” he concluded.
