Limpopo fencing coach to head club in US

Astute fencer Sello Maduma said he looks forward to joining the club and learning from the coaches in the country.

POLOKWANE – Astute fencer Sello Maduma will join a fencing club in Boston in the US as head coach in September.

As a provincial fencing coach, Maduma said he looks forward to joining the club and learning from the coaches in the country.

“To be honest I never thought I’d coach in the United States, until last year when I visited the country. I got to experience first-hand how big fencing is on that side. A friend of mine sent me a link about a job at a club and I sent my Curriculum Vitae, but I really did not think I would get a reply. A few weeks later, I got an e-mail requesting an interview and I was offered the job.”

He said he is going to miss the fencers that he worked with over the three years and half years in the province.

“I am happy that in a very short space of time we were able to grow the number of fencers and also improve the quality of fencing.”

Maduma boasts an International Olympic Committee Olympic Solidarity Fencing Coaching certificate, which he completed in the US last September.

He was selected by the committee out of several fencing coaches in the world, and was based at the University of Delaware, equipping himself with the latest fencing coaching skills and scientific methods.

Through the course, he was able to grow as a fencer and develop more fencers in the province.

“The course gave me a practical and programme-oriented approach towards developing proficiency in the areas of coaching leadership, sport sciences, talent identification, athlete development, coaching education, grassroots sport development and ethical aspects of coaching at all levels of competition and across multiple sporting codes.”
