Vendors cash in on the matric results

Two street vendors selling fruit were able to cash in on the release of the matric results in Dorp Street on Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – Two street vendors selling fruit were able to cash in on the release of the matric results in Dorp Street on Tuesday.

Between them, Johanna Lekota (53) and Mokgadi Serumula (50) have been selling fruit near the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for over 30 years.

Both agree that when it comes to business, thinking outside the box has its advantages. “We saw all the children coming to school and thought that it would be a good idea to move closer to the school to sell our fruit. This turned out to be a good idea and we sold much more than we would have at our usual spot near the hospital,” Serumula said.

The two women said they would go on pension in a few years’ time, and used the money they made daily to cover their expenses.

“Besides selling to the learners, we had the opportunity to share their excitement over their results, as well as their plans for the future. When we grew up there was no money to go to school and being there, listening to the learners, brought us both hope and sadness: hope that these children have all they need to make a success and sadness that we never had the chance receive matric certificates,” Lekota said.
