Polokwane’s leadership tackles water challenges

Polokwane Mayor John Mpe is adamant that the progress with the implementation of projects to augment the city's water supply from Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) should be fast tracked.

POLOKWANE – The groundwater projects should, when completed, be able to augment the city’s bulk water allocation from LNW with a further 32 megalitres per day, sourced from boreholes in and around the city. The consistent flow of water from the boreholes will to a certain extent, alleviate some of the challenges when supply from LNW is interrupted.

During a meeting called by Mpe last Wednesday, the political leadership zoomed into the challenges of underground water projects that are under implementation but continues to experience challenges and slow progress. The meeting was also attended by contractors, consultants, project managers, and the municipality’s senior managers.

Mpe said that the purpose of the meeting was to understand and unlock the challenges that are hindering progress for completion of these important projects.

“We are at a crossroad because the people want water and we must get these projects completed because these are projects that will bring stability to the provision of water within the municipality,” he said adding that inadequate water provision is not only detrimental to the consumption by the residents, but also to the economy of the city.

“A stable supply of water is also key to job creation because developers require a guarantee of water supply and without the guarantee there won’t be any development, no development means no job creation,” Mpe emphasised.

“The expected outcome of the meeting was to provide a concrete programme that will ensure that the city’s residents and businesses get the best out of the municipality,” the mayor added.
