Cut-off low to bring “bitterly cold conditions” this weekend

A mere high of 13ºC is expected in Polokwane on Sunday (May 22) according to People's Weather.

POLOKWANE – A cut-off low system is expected to bring bitterly cold conditions across South Africa this weekend.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), an array of weather conditions will stem from a cold front that will cause an upper-air trough and develop into a cut-off low pressure system by Friday.

This will bring low maximum temperatures, rain and snow in certain parts of South Africa.

So how will this affect Polokwane and Limpopo?

Thunderstorms, combined with strong, gusty surface winds are expected over the central interior by Friday afternoon, spreading to parts of Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal by Saturday.

Bitterly cold conditions are expected to spread to the central and eastern parts by Friday and Saturday with maximum temperatures not expected to exceed 14°C over the interior of the country.

In addition, rainy conditions are expected to continue over the eastern parts of Limpopo on Sunday, but the SAWS said weather conditions are expected to clear and temperatures rise from Monday (May 23) onwards as the system exits the country.

People’s Weather has forecast maximum temperatures in the low to high teens in Polokwane this weekend.

Saturday will peak at 18ºC while Sunday will cool down to a mere 13ºC.
