Man dies at Limpopo hospital after jumping off roof

The man, who was described as 'aggressive', threw bricks towards the ICU and female surgical ward before injuring himself.

LIMPOPO – Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has sent her condolences to the family of a man who died at the Tshilidzini Hospital yesterday (February 4).

The man, who the department described as an ‘unknown medical patient’, died after being admitted to the ICU.

According to departmental spokesperson Neil Shikwambana, hospital authorities were alerted to the incident after the man climbed on the roof of a building under construction.

“He was allegedly throwing bricks at the female and ICU wards of the hospital,” he explained.

Shikwambana said windows were smashed in the process and that security personnel tried to control the situation while they waited for the police.

“A security officer sustained minor injuries during the incident. The man allegedly took a piece of glass and stabbed himself in the neck, unprovoked, before he jumped off. He was taken to the nearby ICU where he was resuscitated but despite the team’s efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was certified dead,” he said.

Shikwambana said more details about the man is not yet know and that police are investigating the matter.
