Limpopo SAPS hunt for killers of local attorney

The 46-year-old prominent lawyer, attached to the Legal Aid South Africa office in Thohoyandou, was gunned down in front of his house on January 16.

LIMPOPO – A cloud of mourning is hanging over Maniini Block K as the Manwadu family and the community grief the sudden death of attorney Mmbambadzeni James Manwadu.

The 46-year-old prominent lawyer, attached to the Legal Aid South Africa office in Thohoyandou, was gunned down in front of his house on Sunday, January 16.

It is alleged that Manwadu met his untimely death as he was about to open the gate to his house. He is said to have been approached by two persons who shot him several times.

His sister, Christina Manwadu said the family is distraught about what happened.

“We are sad because we lost a very valuable family member in such a cruel way for no apparent reason.” Mmbambadzeni was attached to the high court, and the head of the Legal Aid South Africa at the Thohoyandou office, Thomas Madzaga described him as a hard worker.

“We have lost an asset who selflessly served the interests of the poor.”

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the police in Thohoyandou are seeking information that can assist them in apprehending the perpetrators in this murder. According to Mojapelo, the victim arrived at home in Maniini Block K and was reportedly approached by two suspects who shot him several times.

“Following the incident, the police and emergency services were called and the victim was certified dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as Mmbambadzeni James Manwadu and he was attached to the Legal Aid South Africa in Thohoyandou,” explained Mojapelo.

He said anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects should contact detective sergeant Thabo Samuel Malapela on 060 852 8283 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or visit their nearest police station.

Mojapelo added that the motive of the killing was unknown and police investigations are ongoing.

Mmbambadzeni was buried on January 22 in the family’s orchard in Muledane village. A memorial service was held on January 20.
