CPF warns residents after ‘baboon’ is spotted in Sterpark
The CPF has sent out a warning after a primate, believed to be a baboon, was spotted in Sterpark this morning.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism is aware of a stray primate, believed to be a baboon, which has been spotted in and around the suburbs of Bendor and Sterpark. Departmental spokesperson Zaid Kalla told Review that efforts are being made to manage the situation. Review spoke to Graham Brown, the deputy chairperson of sector 2 of the Community Policing Forum, who was informed about the baboon sighting on Monday morning (January 17).
He shared the information across the relevant community groups and immediately sought help from LEDET. His message said the baboon was last spotted near the corner of Juno and Aries streets by a domestic worker in the area.
“There have been a number of sightings of a baboon in the Bendor and Sterpark areas, and I have reported this to nature conservation who informed me there has recently been an infestation of vervet monkeys and baboons,” the message read.
Brown warned residents not to approach or attempt to capture the animal but instead to contact the relevant authorities when they spot these animals. He reminded the public that “discharging a firearm in a residential area can be a chargeable offence”.
Kalla has in the meantime warned that the baboon can be dangerous when cornered. He advised parents to ensure that young children and toddlers are in the care of their mothers and/or nannies at all times.
“Doors and windows must be kept closed where the animal is frequently seen. Those who come across the animal must notify the department immediately.” Residents are further advised not to feed the baboon. Brown added that as a concerned citizen and an animal lover he has been in contact with local veterinarians.
“My hope is we can capture and relocate the animal without it being hurt.”
This is not the first time a wild animal has been spotted in the city. In 2014 a leopard was spotted at the Coca-Cola Fortune manufacturing plant in Marmer Street, Magna Via.
