Hijacker takes his own life after residents corner him

According to the police, the man shot himself after a failed hijacking attempt in the Thohoyandou CBD.

LIMPOPO – An incident in the Thohoyandou CBD at around 16:30 yesterday (September 28) claimed the life of one man, while another was rushed to hospital.

It is believed that a 53-year-old female driver was held at gun point when she stopped at a traffic circle in the CBD.

“The man reportedly forced her out of the vehicle at the traffic circle. A 23-year-old man, who was passing by, noticed the incident and tried to intervene. He was shot in the leg, allegedly by the suspect,” reads a statement by police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

He explained that residents also noticed the incident and gathered at the scene.

“The suspect was cornered next to the magistrate’s court, when he reportedly shot himself and died on the spot. The police were alerted and upon arrival with emergency personnel, they found the suspect lying in a pool of blood,” Mojapelo said.

He added that there were various items such as bricks and stones at the scene.

“Police recovered a firearm with live ammunition, an empty cartridge and suspected stolen cellphones still in packages. The injured witness was rushed to the hospital,” Mojapelo explained.

He confirmed to Review that the police in Thohoyandou have opened cases of inquest, attempted murder, carjacking, and the possession of suspected stolen properties, unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
