Non-compliance on Limpopo roads will not be tolerated

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya believes that the province can have zero fatalities this long weekend if motorists adhere to traffic rules.

LIMPOPO – With higher traffic volumes expected across all major routes in the province, the Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has called on road users to adhere to the rules of the road.

Lerule-Ramakhanya said that traffic volumes are expected to increase along the N1 northbound road as thousands of migrant workers from Gauteng and other provinces take advantage of the long weekend and travel home to spend time with their families.

“Traffic is expected to increase on Thursday afternoon until late at night and on Sunday when most of the holidaymakers drive back to their respective destinations.”

She adds that the department has been hard at work to reduce the number of fatal accidents over weekends and advised motorists to “approach the long weekend with extra caution”.

“Most traffic incidents in the province are due to unsafe overtaking, speeding, reckless and negligent driving among other factors. We call on all road users to exercise their maximum patience and to observe their speed to accommodate the expected congestion.”

The department said traffic officers will be deployed and roadblocks staged in all the major roads of the province to monitor compliance.

“Non-compliance will not be tolerated, and harsh steps will be taken against transgressors,” she concluded.
