Limpopo: R2m in illicit cigarettes confiscated, three men arrested
The men, reportedly foreign nationals, were arrested along the N11 towards Mokopane.
LIMPOPO – The police in the province continue their fight against smuggling, possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes.
In one of their recent successes, members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol arrested three foreign nationals on September 14.
Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the men, between the age of 29 and 43, were arrested at Masodi village under the Mahwelereng policing area after they were found transporting illicit cigarettes.Â
“The police received a tip-off about men driving a white panel van from Zimbabwe, in which they were transporting illicit cigarettes along the R521 to Polokwane. The vehicle was ultimately spotted along the N11 road towards Mokopane,” his statement read.
Mojapelo said more than 50 boxes that contained more than 100 cartons of illicit cigarettes, with an estimated value of more than R2m, were confiscated.
Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe commended the members for the arrest. She also thanked community members for continuously assisting the police in their fight against crime.
