Muni: Traffic lights to replace circle

The newly elected mayoral committee member for land use management and spatial planning, councillor Hafiz Shaikh says the decision was approved by council after certain considerations were made.

POLOKWANE – The Seshego Circle is a popular landmark in the area but will soon be replaced with traffic lights.

The newly elected mayoral committee member for land use management and spatial planning, councillor Hafiz Shaikh says the decision was approved by council after certain considerations were made.

“It was established that removing the circle would be most convenient for the municipality and motorists. A big consideration was that the Leeto La Polokwane bus lane cannot be separated if there is a traffic circle en route. Council also made considerations for the traffic that builds up at the circle during peak hours,” he said.

Shaikh added that plans are afoot to construct municipal offices close to the construction site and some of the land had to be exchanged with a local businessman in order for the plans to go ahead.

Motorists are urged to approach the area with caution and patience until construction is completed.

Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed that no objections were received during the public participation process.

“The scope of work includes the changing of the traffic circle to a signalised intersection, the construction of walkways, beautification, street-scaping and the installation of streetlights.”
