Tremor felt in Tzaneen and surrounding areas

The tremor was reported in the area on Saturday evening but as of yet there is no official report of the exact magnitude or depth of this seismic movement.

LIMPOPO – Social media is abuzz this morning after reports came in of a slight tremor in the Tzaneen area. The tremor was felt in Tzaneen and as far a field as Haenertsburg and Magoebaskloof on Saturday evening.

According to reports the epicentre was approximately 15km from Tzaneen near between Mieliekloof and Deer Park.

Over 100 reports of seismic activity were reported on the Volcano Discovery platform.

The seismic activity was mostly felt in Tzaneen and according to reports posted on the platform it lasted up to 20 seconds in some areas.  Others reported a loud bang that woke them up.

A resident in Agatha said it sounded like thunder while in Arborpark they said that the ground was shaking.

A report from a Haenersburg resident read that they experienced light shaking for 10 seconds. “Everything rattled and it sounded like a big truck passing by.”

Magoebaskloof area also reported light shaking. “Could hear it coming and then bed was vibrating before hearing it moving off into the distance.”

Despite the many reports received the seismic movement has not yet been verified as an earthquake.

“There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this earthquake which was reported in the area of Nkowakowa on Saturday, July 3 at approximately 21:21. We expect more accurate data to still emerge. The location and magnitude mentioned are indicative and temporary until the AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency,” reads a report issued by Volcano Discovery.
