Rameez Patel : Law team fight recent arrest

Rameez Patel and his legal team will fight his recent re-arrest after his bail application in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 14 August 2020, was granted in the murder case against his mother, Mahejeen.

POLOKWANE – Three months after the bail application was granted, the Provincial Office of the Public Prosecutor tabled a review application against the granting of the bail.

The review application was granted and heard by judge GC Muller and acting judge M Naudé on April 30. Patel’s legal team lodged an application to appeal the judgment, but the application was denied.

They then appealed to the Supreme Court. “Despite the petition, which was lodged and filed, a warrant for arrest was issued,” Andries Rheeder, Patel’s legal representative told our journalist.

“We are of the opinion that the filing of a petition at the highest Court of Appeal meant that all processes would be halted. We are of the opinion that our client’s arrest is unlawful, we believe the judgment regarding the review was not correct, thus the petition.”

Patel was arrested in 2015 and charged for the murder of his wife. He was released on R250 000 bail, but re-arrested and charged for the murder of his mother, Mahejeen, in September 2017. He was released on bail again in August last year after three failed bail applications.

Patel maintain he is not guilty on both murder charges. He will appear in court again on the murder charge of his wife on 7 July, and in August on the murder charge of his mother.
