Mookgophong police officials arrested for corruption, found guilty

The warrant officer and constable demanded a bribe from a motorist in lieu of impounding his vehicle

LIMPOPO – A warrant officer and a constable, who were attached to the Tuinplaas Police Station, were found guilty of corruption following more than three years of investigation.

The accused, WO Richard Matsobane Molokome (54) and Const Karabo Archibald Sepato (40) were convicted on Wednesday, 3 March by the Mokopane Regional Court and the case was postponed to 19 April for sentencing, says Spokesperson for the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

Their conviction follows an incident on 12 December 2017 where the duo demanded a bribe from a motorist.

“On the day the duo were performing crime prevention duties through a stop and search when the complainant was stopped and searched. Defects were discovered on the vehicle and instead of issuing summons or impounding the vehicle, the two cops demanded a R1 000-00 bribe.” The motorist paid the bribe for the release of his vehicle and then reported the matter to the Hawks.

The accused were arrested soon after. Matimba says the duo have made numerous court appearances until they were each released on warning.
