Limpopo nurse attacked by partner in yet another GBV incident

The woman, a professional nurse in the Waterberg district, is still admitted in hospital after the assault.

LIMPOPO – The swift reaction by police in the province has been welcomed by Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba. Ramathuba praised police for their actions following the arrest of a male employee of the department (a groundsman), who allegedly assaulted his partner.

The man’s partner is is a professional nurse at the Pienaarsrivier Clinic in the Waterberg district, according to a statement by the MEC’s Spokesperson, Thilivhali Muavha. Muavha said reports suggest that the two were in the nurses’ home where they stay together when the fight ensued on Sunday night.

“The lady sustained serious injuries and is still admitted in a nearby hospital where she is receiving medical attention, whereas the guy was arrested, denied bail and will appear again in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on 9 November,” he explained.

Ramathuba wished the nurse a speedy recovery and condemned the incident of gender-based violence in the strongest terms.

“Gender-based violence is a profound Human Rights violation and widespread problem in our society, which disproportionately affects women and girls. We appeal to all young women, especially our professionals, that whenever they see signs of jealousy or an inferiority complex which leads to obsession, they must quit while they still can. We will follow this case to ensure that justice is served,” said Ramathuba.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed the arrest. “A 34-year-old groundsman, employed at the Department of Health, was arrested on Sunday, 25 October for allegedly assaulting a professional nurse reported to be his girlfriend. It is reported that the victim (33) was in her room with the suspect when he started to accuse her of infidelity.” Ngoepe said.

He added that the man strangled her and hit her head against a wall. “A fight ensued between the couple and the nurse sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted in hospital for medical treatment,” he explained.
