Boy (14) killed during mob justice incident in Malamulele

The police in Limpopo have arrested 11 suspects in two separate incidents of mob justice in the province this weekend.

LIMPOPO – Two incidents of mob justice, in the Malamulele and Matlerekeng policing areas respectively, have been strongly condemned by Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba.

In Malamulele, five men between the ages of 29 and 44, were arrested at Gandlanani Mavambe village, this morning, 25 October, after they assaulted a 14-year-old boy.

“Residents in the area traced and caught the boy, accusing him of being responsible for a number of burglaries in the area. The group assaulted the boy with various objects, killing him instantly,” said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The police also arrested six men, between the ages of 29 and 46, following an incident of mob justice in the Matlerekeng policing area outside Groblersdal, on Saturday, 24 October.

“Residents gathered to protest against a man who was found in possession of suspected stolen properties at Matlerekeng RDP Section. This suspected person was followed, caught and assaulted with various objects,” Ngoepe added.

He said police managed to rescue the person. “The group of people proceeded to the police station to demand the victim. The police then arrested six people and they will be facing a charge of assault,” he explained.

The arrested suspects in both incidents will appear before the Malamulele and Dennilton Magistrate’s Courts soon and police investigations are continuing.
