7 suspects caught selling stolen water tanks, arrested in Mankweng

The tanks were presumably stolen from schools on the outskirts of the Polokwane municipal area.

LIMPOPO – A crew of seven people, aged between 24 and 60, have been arrested on suspicion of selling suspected stolen water tanks. Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe says the arrest took place at in Rampheri village, ga-Molepo within the Mankweng policing area on Friday, 16 October.

He explained that crime prevention members received a tip-off about a man selling suspected stolen water tanks from a vehicle, they reacted and the man his crew were arrested while trying to sell the last tank. “Five water tanks which had already been sold by the time of the arrest were also recovered and those involved arrested. Preliminary police investigations revealed that these tanks were stolen from schools around Matlala area outside Polokwane.”

This arrest was part of week long joint police operations which were conducted through the province. These operations led to the arrest of a total of 1 925 suspects for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, possession of illicit cigarettes, Immigration Act, possession of drugs, rape, sexual assault, assault GBH, burglary residential and business, stock theft, illegal mining, drug related crime, driving under the influence of liquor, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, illegal trading in liquor to carrying of dangerous weapons, Ngoepe said.

The operations also saw  3251 compliance inspections at liquor premises and 224 liquor control operations, 155 roadblocks, 182 rural safety operations, 4 758 stop and searches, 4 365 Vehicle Check Points, 47 shebeens closed, 17 292 motor vehicles searched and 33 254 people searched.

“The operations where conducted from Monday, 12 October until this morning, Monday, 19 October, comprised members from various police units including Limpopo Highway Patrol Team, Crime Intelligence Unit, Operational Response Services (ORS), Tracking Team, Stock Theft Unit, Air-Wing, Tactical Response Team(TRT), Endangered Species and various detectives and crime prevention members.”

During the operations the police managed to recover counterfeit cigarettes, 56 dangerous weapons, 22 firearms, 76 knives, 780 bottles of illegal liquor, five suspected stolen motor vehicles and drugs.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has commended the operational members for their endless efforts in fighting all criminal activities throughout the Province.

“Some of the arrested suspects have already started appearing before the different magistrate courts across the province, Ngoepe concluded.
