ANC Women’s League lead silent anti-GBV protest near Seshego

The demonstration of about 50 women called for harsher sentences against perpetrators of extreme violence against women.

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has made a commitment that her department will follow-up on all unresolved gender-based violence related cases in the province.

Lerule-Ramakhanya, together with the ANC Women’s League in Limpopo, led a silent demonstration in extension 78, outside Seshego on Thursday.

Lerule-Ramakhanya says government has programmes in place to ensure the safety of vulnerable groups and victims are urged to speak out against any form of abuse.

“We will grow as a cluster now because some of the issues that they raised belong to the courts, the police and community safety. We need to activate our structures with information. We will then raise these issues within clusters and see how we can resolve these issues. With incidences where young women cannot be buried, we have started processing to ensure that what remains with the police should be released back to the families for proper burial.”

Departmental Spokesperson, Mike Maringa said police are yet to make a break-through in some cases, while others are already in court but have been delayed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya will work closely with all justice cluster departments to prioritise gender-based violence cases. The case of Precious Ramabulana, Precious Magabane and the four Phasha kids killed by their father were some of those highlighted by the demonstrators,” Maringa added.
