Cabinet extends State of Disaster

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation tonight on further developments.

The National State of Disaster has been extended by another month.

An announcement to this effect was earlier announced in the Government Gazette by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The National State of Disaster, which was extended in July, was to expire today, but law prescribes that after the initial three-month period, the state may be extended should it be deemed necessary.

On 18 March this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa initially declared a National State of Disaster in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, subsequent to which it was extended to 15 July, and then by another month, to 15 August.

Ramaphosa earlier today announced that he would be briefing the nation tonight at 20:00, on developments in South Africa’s risk-adjusted strategy to curb the spread of Covid-19.
