Polokwane municipal worker charged with attempted murder

The man is expected to apply for bail next month.

POLOKWANE – A 36-year-old employee of the Polokwane Municipality was remanded in custody earlier this week following an incident at the municipal premises in Ladanna on Friday afternoon in which vehicles were damaged and a co-worker injured.

The accused faces charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property and is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 5 September for bail application.

The man reportedly locked himself in a municipal truck and was in possession of a weapon.

According to a police report, he threatened those who wanted to approach him, and caused ‘havoc’ when anyone attempted to intervene.
“As his co-workers approached him wanting to find out what was going on, he started swerving the truck in all directions, injuring a 55-year-old law enforcement officer,” Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapleo said.

The police were alerted to the situation.

“The man was arrested shortly thereafter and taken to hospital. The officer, who had been run over, suffered multiple injuries and was also taken to hospital.”
Police investigations continue.
