Dendron farm attack: Hundreds protest at court as suspects appear

The protest follows the attack on an elderly couple on Wednesday morning

LIMPOPO – People from as far afield as Hoedspruit and Tzaneen rallied together in Morebeng (Soekmekaar) today for the court case of two men who reportedly attacked a couple on a farm in the Dendron area earlier this week.

The elderly couple was attacked in their home at around 01:00 on Wednesday. The woman was reportedly raped and her husband severely assaulted. She was also shot in the leg during the incident. A 96-year-old woman who was also in the house didn’t sustain any physical injuries.

“Several rifles, a bakkie and a Plasma TV were taken during the incident.”

The police were alerted and the suspects were spotted on the Matlala road by members from the Highway Patrol Unit. “When they attempted to stop the vehicle they sped off, resulting in a car chase until they were cornered on the R101 south of Polokwane.

“Two of the men were arrested and a third, who shot at officers, was shot and injured and was taken to hospital where he was admitted under police guard.”

The suspects, aged between 28 and 38, appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on charges of house robbery and rape and the case was postponed to 14 August for a bail application.

They will also appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen properties at a later stage.
