Fear of the virus fuels stigmatisation, says MEC

Dr Phophi Ramathuba has urged the community to take the safety precautions as instructed and prescribed by government.

POLOKWANE – Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba says fear of the Coronavirus is to blame for the stigmatisation of those who contract the virus. “People were made to fear the virus before they were made aware of how it moves around, which explains the level of fear in our communities,” she said.

Ramathuba added that 80% of the population is likely to contract the virus, while 80% of those who will easily recover, and 15% requiring specialised medical attention.  Her estimate is that only 3% of those who contract the virus, would eventually succumb to it.

“There is no need to fear each other if the correct measures have been put in place. If you sanitise your hands, wear a mask and practise social distancing, then you do not have anything to worry about.”

She says an increase in stigmatisation is also due to an increase in Covid-19 cases and people realising they may have come into contact with a confirmed patient, without having followed proper safety requirements.

“This virus does not discriminate, it does not have a favourite and will be contracted by anyone who does not follow the regulations despite their position, social class and level of education,” she added.

The MEC urged patients to be understanding towards health care professionals stating that they are sometimes also tired and irritable. “We are the ones who have to deal with the increasing deaths in our hospitals, so show some patience,” she concluded.
