Covid-19: Limpopo Health Department embarks on urgent recruitment drive

The Department of Health, like other provinces, has issued an urgent circular recruiting certain health professionals to be available immediately during the lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

POLOKWANE – The President, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Monday evening addressing the nation, said that a new phase of fighting the Covid-19 virus will begin. He announced that people with symptoms will be referred to mobile clinics for testing and that an extensive tracing system to trace those that have been in contact with persons testing positive, will be using mobile technology and additional workers will be deployed rapidly.

The geographical location of new cases will also be monitored.

Ramaphosa said 10 000 field workers will be rolled out in a programme to screen, test, trace and manage the spread of the virus. They will be visiting homes in villages, towns and cities to screen residents for Covid-19 symptoms. These people will then be referred to mobile and other clinics for testing.

Health Spokesperson for the MEC, Thilivhali Muavha told Review on Tuesday that planning has still to be done to implement the programme, as it was only announced the previous day, and services would need to be capacitated, both in numbers and other resources. “It is not a simple exercise, and capacity will be needed. The rapid response teams in the districts and tracing teams’ scopes need to be expanded, as individual homes will be visited randomly too. that is one reason the posts have been advertised.”

Home-based carers will be utilised to assist with screening.

“It is difficult to say exactly when the programme will be rolled out fully, but it will be as soon as possible, as we are dealing with a serious issue which receives priority attention.”
