Limpopo MEC’s test negative for Covid-19

The two MEC's alerted the Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba that they would self-quarantine until their test results were available.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo and the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Thandi Moraka both tested negative for Covid-19.

Both women last week went into self-quarantine after coming into contact with Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane, who tested positive for Covid-19 after she returned to South Africa from a trip to the UK and Scotland.

The MEC’s alerted the Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba that they would self-quarantine until their test results were available.

“We are excited that the results have come back negative. The MEC’s will remain in self-quarantine until their 14 days have passed, as part of protocol,” said the Premier Chupu Mathabatha, in a statement.

Ramathuba and her team have screened and tested all those who came into contact with Molokwane. All of them tested negative, according to the statement.

“The lockdown regulations have empowered the Department of Health to trace and arrest anyone who may have tested positive, but refused to be quarantined. The law also allows for an arrest and forced testing for anyone who is suspected to have come into contact with people or persons suspected of having the Covid-19 virus,” the statement reads.

Mathabatha called on Limpopo citizens to observe all the safety rules so that a ‘catastrophic situation’ can be avoided in the province.

“We urge our people to stay indoors, to wash their hands with soap and water to sanitise where possible. Avoid any close contact with people and report any case to health officials,” he said.
