‘Mysterious’ death of medical intern in Limpopo

The 24-year-old was stationed at the Mankweng Hospital

LIMPOPO – The MEC of Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba has reacted with shock and sadness following the discovery of the body of a medical intern on the Mankweng Hosptal grounds  over the weekend.

The body of 24-year-old Shongile Pretty Nkwashu was discovered in her flat at the doctor’s residence on Sunday, 19 January. The hospital’s Executive Management Team made the discovery and the police had to break down the locked door of her dormitory to access the body.

Shongile, from Dzumeri in Giyani, was one of the interns who had just completed her studies and started work with the department on the 2 January. Police investigations into her death are still underway.

In a statement, the MEC said she was saddened by the loss a young life and the mystery surrounding her death. “We will work with the police through our Forensic Unit and we will not rest until we find out what happened to our young and beautiful smart doctor.”

The MEC further extended her condolences to the Nkwashu family and will visit the family today to convey her condolences.
