Limpopo achieves lowest pass rate of 73,2%

The country achieved an 80% pass rate for the first time, according to Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga.

LIMPOPO – Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga announced the matric pass rate for the class of 2019 in Midrand earlier this evening. She announced an overall pass rate of 81,3% which is an improvement of 8,1% from last year.

Motshekga said that none of the 75 districts in the country achieved a pass rate of below 60%. She added that 10 districts achieved a pass rate above 80%. The leading district in Limpopo was announced as Vhembe East.

All provinces achieved a more than 70% pass rate, with Free State taking top spot as the best-performing province with 88,4%. Limpopo achieved the lowest with 73,2% but this is an improvement of 3,8% to the previous year.

“Limpopo is making remarkable improvements,” Motshekga added.

There was an 8% increase in the amount of bachelors passes and Motshekga said that they hit their benchmark of 36,9%.

“I cannot ask for more,” the minister jokingly said. “We have reached a desirable stability and we should continue to do all we can to make sure that our learners succeed,” she said.

She congratulated the hard work of the learners and thanked the MEC’s, teachers, principals and parents for the role they played to achieve these results.

“It is the first time that we have achieved an 80% pass rate in our country. It is very humbling but we have to improve in all our phases. We will pilot an inclusive bracket to take in more variables than just overall pass rate to determine the best performing province,”she concluded.
