Man (27) in court for murder of Samwu shop steward

This after two Samwu members were murdered last year and a R250K reward was offered for each murder.

LIMPOPO – A 27-year-old man has been formally charged with the murder of South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) Shop Steward, Ronald Mani.

The 50-year-old Mani was gunned down at a local liquor outlet at Itsani village just outside Thohoyandou at around 20:00 on 30 January 2019.

Since the murder, a high level team of investigators led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Crime Detection, Maj Gen Samuel Manala was assembled to track down the people responsible for the murder.

Through relentless investigation the accused was linked to the crime and was formally charged with the murder of the deceased in the Thohyandou Magistrate’s Court on 30 December, said Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The accused has been in custody since his arrest on 1 March 2019 in Vosloorus, Gauteng for intimidation which emanated from an incident in which a councillor received calls of intimidation from an unknown person. He was also then charged under the Immigration Act as he did not possess the necessary documents to be in the country.

He was remanded in custody until 28 February. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has commended the members for their sterling detective work which led to the arrest of the suspect.
