Zara’s story is one of puppy love and guardian angels

Zara has crept into the hearts of those who know her story.

POLOKWANE – With her big brown eyes and puppy-breath, 10-week old Zara, a pure-bred pit-bull, quickly crept into her owner, Barend Raath’s heart. The young pup brought much happiness and joy to the household until one sad day when he accidentally ran over her with his vehicle.

“It happened in an instant. We have another dog, a staffie and we presume she ran towards the vehicle as I drove out and Zara followed her. I immediately picked her up, got her into my car and sped towards Pietersburg Animal Clinic,” Barend explained to Review.

It was confirmed that Zara’s leg was broken and Barend, thinking only about his puppy’s well-being, put down the deposit.  She was immediately admitted for surgery and only after the consultation he was informed that the fees would be much higher than he originally had hoped. She had to get a pin in her leg and was admitted to stay until she is fully rehabilitated.

After a plea on Facebook a total of 22 guardian angels came forward and contributed to the care of Zara with Polokwane resident, Fred du Plooy coming to the rescue and paying a big chunk of the medical expenses.

Fred spoke to Review and said he is an animal lover and someone has to be there to look after them. “They cannot care for themselves and therefore we have to. The owner took the puppy to the vet to get help and when he needed further help I offered.”

He added that he would like to help more animals in need.

Zara is still admitted and is on cage rest. The clinic explained that the healing process is a timely process and that she needs to be kept as still as possible. They added that she is eating well and reacted very well to the treatment.

The little fighter has also received treatment from Kristel Davidson, a veterinary physiotherapist and with the donations received, she has been vaccinated and micro chipped.

Zara who has crept into the hearts of those who know her story, is getting stronger and goes out for a bit of fresh air on a daily basis. She is also starting to put pressure onto her injured leg.
