Nine people killed in head-on collision near Hoedspruit

Members of the Endangered Species unit were summoned to the scene after buckets of snake sin, dried star fish, crabs and other marine animals were found in one of the vehicles. 

LIMPOPO – Police say the process of identifying nine people, who were killed in a head-on collision on Saturday afternoon, 16 November is underway.

This after two vehicles collided along the R351 road towards Swadini, killing nine people.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo says a Toyota single-cab bakkie was travelling from Swadini when it collided head-on with a Toyota Avanza travelling from Hoedspruit. “Eight people were instantly killed and two were transported to hospital for treatment, of which one later succumbed to injuries,” he explained.

Mojapelo added that the Endangered Species Unit of the SAPS was summoned to the scene after the discovery of a consignment of buckets full of snake skin, dried starfish, dried crabs and other marine animals. “They were apparently carried in the back of the bakkie and investigations into their origin are unfolding,” he said.

It is unclear how many people were in each vehicle and the cause of the accident is being investigated by police.
