11 more arrested in Operation Corolla

11 men attached to a privately-owned testing station in Marble Hall, were earlier today arrested on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

LIMPOPO – The accused were arrested during Operation Corolla, conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

In a statement, Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke said the men had used the identity particulars of unsuspecting individuals to issue roadworthy certificates for scores of vehicles that were never brought to the station for physical examination.

Upon arrival at the scene, the team caught several officials in the process of burning and destroying evidence.

During the arrest documents, computers and cellphones were seized. Some of the documents were found hidden in their private vehicles on the premises.

Among the arrested includes the vehicle testing station owner, the manager, examiners and an administration clerk.

The total number of officials arrested as part of the ongoing operation now stands at 15. This after the four officials were re-arrested at Phalala vehicle testing station in Lephalale on Monday.

All 11 men will make their first court first appearance in the Marble Hall Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 18 October on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
