Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race set for 7 September

The race serves as a memorial to runner Hanli Steyn who frequented the running scene and lost her life and fight against cancer in 2015.

POLOKWANE – In life we are often faced with challenges and how we tackle them reveals our true character. Each year the Polokwane Athletics Club hosts the Hanli Steyn Memorial Race and on Saturday, 7 September, athletes can once again show their running talent.

The race serves as a memorial to runner Hanli Steyn who frequented the running scene and lost her life and fight against cancer in 2015. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.Her husband, Stefan who is also a avid runner explained previously that after she received treatment she went into remission, but in 2009 she had a blackout and doctors found that the cancer has not only returned but also spread to her brain.

“Six years and seven brain operations later, my wife died on 21 July 2015,” he said.

Stefan further explained that she was a brilliant mother and very supporting wife. “Lessons I learned from her included never to give up and to keep on going. She taught us perseverance, hope and faith.”

The race takes place at the Polokwane Rugby C field next to Peter Mokaba Stadium. Runners can enter on Friday, 6 September from 16:30 to 19:00 and Saturday morning from 05:00 to 06:30.

Starting times are 06:30 for the 10 km and the 21.1 km and 06:40 for the 5 km.

Entry fees are R40 for the 5 Km, R70 for the 10 km and R100 for the 21.1 km. All finishers will receive a medal.
