MEC Masemola calls on motorists to exercise patience following yet another fatal head-on collision on Youth Day

Three people died when a minibus and a sedan collided head-on along the D4100 road in the Sekhukhune district, bringing the total lives lost on this Youth Day to nine

LIMPOPO – Namane Dickson Masemola, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety has on Youth Day called on motorists to exercise patience and extra care on the road following two separate fatal head-on collisions that took place in Mopani and Sekhukhune districts, respectively.

In the latest collision, three people lost their lives and 15 were left seriously injured after a minibus and light motor vehicle collided head-on along the  D4100 between Setlaboswane & Mphane villages in the Sekhukhune district this morning, said Spokesperson for Department, Joel Seabi in a statement on Sunday.

“The possible cause of this horrific accident is unsafe overtaking,” Seabi added.

This comes after six people burned to death after a BMW sedan and a Mercedez-Benz sedan collided head-on along the R81 road between Giyani and Polokwane near Dingamazi village, Mopani district in the early hours of Sunday morning.

MEC Masemola has since extended his condolences to the families of those who died and further wished a speedy recovery to those who are receiving medical attention in the various hospitals. “We warn road traffic infringers to know that the rule of law is sacrosanct and that adherence of provisions of the law is non-negotiable. The province cannot continue to afford more losses of life, one loss of life is one too many.”

The department indicated earlier that increased traffic volumes can be expected on our roads due to the long weekend and the Youth Day celebration in Polokwane. “We call on motorists to exercise patience and extra care when travelling to their various destinations,” Seabi concluded.
