Limpopo roads claim 16 lives over the weekend, reckless driving suspected to the main cause
MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Namane Dickson Masemola has extended his condolences to the families of those who were killed in seven separate motor vehicle accidents over the weekend.
LIMPOPO – Sixteen people died in seven separate accidents which happened in various parts of Limpopo province over the weekend.
In a statement releases, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala says in two of the major accidents, reckless driving is suspected to the main cause.
In the first major accident four people were killed after a Isuzu LDV collided head-on with a Ford LDV, along the R71 near Mageng village after Boyne on Saturday. “It is alleged the one vehicle was overtaking another motor vehicle when it collided head on with the oncoming second vehicle.”

In another serious crash six people lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning when two vehicles collided near Chuenespoort. “It is alleged the accident happened when a the one vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and collided head-on with an on-coming second vehicle,” said Moremi-Taueatsoala.
In the statement MEC Masemola further wished those who were injured, a speedy recovery. “As we convey our deepest condolences we continue to insist that motorists must drive carefully on road. Reckless overtaking, fatigue and speeding have been proven to be one of the major causes of road fatalities. I appeal to road users to exercise patience towards one another and obey the rules of the road at all times. Of importance, is to remember that speed kills. Chances of one dying in a collision multiply two-old if one is speeding,” concluded MEC Masemola.
