Makomabandlela Youth Development Agency tackles drug/substance abuse head on

In a bid to educate as well as create awareness around drug and substance abuse, Makomabandlela Youth Development Agency, over the weekend hosted a drug awareness campaign at Matshelane Mothapo Primary School in Ga-Mothapo.

LIMPOPO – The organisation partnered with Social Development, South African Police Service, University of Limpopo, Health professions and local schools to send out of strong unified message regarding the never ending societal problem.

According to the founder of the foundation, Anthony Maponya, the campaign is an ongoing initiative to educate communities, especially from the rural areas, have little knowledge and information regarding how drug and substance abuse can affect the well-being of the addicted.

“We are very happy with the turnout, especially from the parents, on Saturday and this goes to show that they are aware of the situation and want to see an end to the problem.

On the day representatives of ANOVA Health Institute and Mankweng Hospital spoke about various aspects regarding counselling available for the victims of drug/substance abuse.

Chuene Mathekga, Dietician of Department of Health, Ward 7 CPF coordinator, Monkwe Mathobela were amoung the guests of the day. Mathobela explained that some turn to drug and substance abuse as a way of escape and warned learners that committing crime, even at an young age or under the influence, could adversely affect their futures.

Further more Makombandlela Youth Development addressed the community regarding societal issues and urged them to aim towards building a rehabilitation centre which they can easily access in their area.
