#JusticeforThoriso- Suspects to remain in police custody until next court appearance, says MEC Makurupetje

Court proceedings were delayed after a sixth suspect was arrested overnight.

POLOKWANE – The court case against five suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Thoriso Themane has been postponed to next week.

Five suspects, aged between the ages of 15 and 16-years-old,  appeared in the Polokwane Magistrates Court this morning on charges of murder. Court proceedings were delayed after a sixth suspect was arrested overnight. This suspect will appear with the others on Monday, 4 March.

MEC for Safety and Security, Makoma Makurupetje addressed the media outside the court room following the postponement of the case. She confirmed that the suspects are now in the custody of the police and calls for anyone with information that can assist the police investigation to come forward.

She further called for the community to remain calm and give the police space to continue with the investigations.

Themane was assaulted by a group of teenagers on Saturday night, 23 February and left for dead in Flora Park. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, after being taken to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

According to Col  Moatshe Ngoepe, Spokesperson for the police, the motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage and  Police investigations are still underway. Gangsterism may not be ruled out and more arrests are expected.” he said.
