Mogalakwena acting community services manager among those arrested during public violence incident in mokopane

He together with several co-workers appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate court on Monday, 28 January on charges ranging from public violence to pointing and discharging of a firearm in a public place.

Mogalakwena Municipality’s Acting Community Service Manager, Jabu Mashamaite, is among nine people arrested in connection with a public violence incident at a local taxi rank over the weekend.

He together with several co-workers appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate court on Monday, 28 January on charges ranging from public violence to pointing and discharging of a firearm in a public place.

Irene Masingi, Spokesperson of the Mokopane Police, said the police was called out just before 12:00 on Sunday morning to the taxi rank in extension 19. “A group of about 300 people had gathered at the taxi rank and started engaging in what appeared like factional fights. During the commotion, two people were stabbed and had to be hospitalised with serious injuries. The police arrested nine suspects aged between 18 and 44 for public violence.”

Mashamaite appeared in court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon to inflict serious bodily harm.

Two of the co-accused, an employee in the electrical department of the municipality and a businessman, also appeared in court and were charged with the pointing and discharge of a firearm in a public place.

Jabu was granted bail of R1 000 and his case was postponed to Friday, 22 February for further investigation. The co-accused were granted R2 000 bail each and their cases were postponed to Tuesday, 5 March, for further investigation.
