Year’s first Shavathon is this Saturday

There are quite a number of people who colour their hair regularly for aesthetic reasons. But for some people, like those receiving treatment for cancer, having hair is a luxury as chemotherapy often results in hair loss.

POLOKWANE – To raise awareness for cancer and the suffering that goes along with it, the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) hosts a Shavathon each year.

“The idea is to shave your hair, but there is the opportunity to shave it as well,” explains Christopher Combrink, community mobiliser from Cansa Polokwane.

“This year, to go along with the theme, there is another alternative namely colouring books.

“Children and adults, can buy Shavathon colouring books of which the pictures will teach you how to be cancer smart.

They will also receive environmental friendly crayons.

Besides the colouring books, there are also T-shirts with the words of the theme, ‘colouring hope’ printed on them.

“The first Shavathon takes place this Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00 at Vleislapa Welgelegen and everyone is invited to join in the fun.”

Dates:

National Shavathon day is on 2 and 3 March for shopping centres and 4 to 8 March for corporate organisations.

To spray your hair, or cut it, cost R35 for children under 12 and R50 for adults.

Anyone who wants to volunteer to host a Shavathon or who would like Cansa to visit them for a Shavathon can contact Christopher at 072 681 1949.
