Ringleader of Phalaborwa dealership robbery arrested during appearance in Johannesburg court

The suspect is believed to be one of the ringleaders of a group of thieves that stole six new Ford Ranger cars at Phalaborwa car dealership in Phalaborwa in December 2017.

LIMPOPO- The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit has arrested another suspect (24) believed to be part of a specialised vehicle theft syndicate.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke says the suspect was arrested the time he was appearing for another unrelated case at the Brixton Regional Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 9 January 2019.

“The suspect is believed to be one of the ringleaders of a group of thieves that stole six new Ford Ranger cars at Phalaborwa car dealership in Phalaborwa in December 2017. Five of the six stolen vehicles were recovered at Limpopo River near Beitbridge before they could be smuggled into Zimbabwe on 9 December 2017,” he explained.

Four of the 11 suspects have since been arrested and appeared in the Musina Magistrates Court but only two were granted R3000 bail each.

“The suspect is expected to make his first appearance today, 10 January, in the Musina Magistrates Court to face charges relating to business burglary and theft of motor vehicles.”

An investigation searching for another possible suspect(s) still continues.
