Mankweng, Moletjie and Seshego hardest hit by heavy rains, says Muni

Majority of the overflows experienced were in the houses/yards situated near down-stream borders of residential areas where runoff accumulates.

POLOKWANE – The municipality is currently conducting assessments on storm water and flooding cases experienced after the recent consecutive rainfalls in the Polokwane Municipality. Areas that were mostly affected include Mankweng, Moletjie, Seshego, Aganang and the City.

“Majority of the overflows experienced were in the houses/yards situated near down-stream borders of residential areas where runoff accumulates. In most house floodings, damage was caused in down stream yards where walls were not provided with weep holes to allow quick discharge of rain water,” a statement explained.

So far, 24 flood cases have been reported and are receiving attention from the municipality and the following areas were affected:

– Seshego Zone 8, 5 and the outskirts of Zone 4,
– Luthuli Park, Extensions 71, 76 and 44,
– Makgodu, Ramongwane and Ga-Semenya,
– Tibane, Mashashane Utjane, Rammetlwane, Lonsdale, Kgabo Park and Tambo View,
– Westernburg, Nirvana, Ivydale, Bendor and Savanna Mall,
– Mankweng Tlhatlhaganya, Unit G, Mantshane, Nobody Meetsematsididi, Leboneng, Ga-Thoka, Mamadimo Park and Moremadi Park.

Runoff/rainwater from upstream in Ramongwane village accumulated into the new constructed road in Ga-Semenya village and this resulted in the obstruction of traffic flow.

The municipality have despatched teams consisting of technicians and foremen in all the affected clusters, to assist in mitigating the floods. The Municipality’s standby teams are also ready and available to assist in diverting flooding away from residential properties.

“No injuries or death cases were encountered as the result of the flooding. Roads and storm water issues can be reported at 015 290 2477 and emergency disasters on 015 290 2000.”
