Did you know the food in your child’s lunchbox can lead to fatigue

Local dietitian Kulani Mtileni gives parents advice on how to pack healthy, energy-boosting lunchboxes

POLOKWANE – Local dietitian Kulani Mtileni says the foods you give your child for breakfast or in their lunchbox can be the reason they feel sleepy and not concentrate in the classroom.

According to Kulani some carbohydrates like pasta can cause a rise in one’s blood sugar, followed by a plunge in insulin levels, which can cause fatigue and weakness in children. “Try avoid starchy foods when packing your child’s school lunch-box,” Kulani said.

He further explains that other foods such as salmon (ray-finned fish), bananas, wheat, cherries, lettuce, berries and red meat (biltong) can also cause fatigue in both kids and adults.  “An excess of junk food like chips, caffeine drinks can also be the main cause of fatigue.”

Opt for a healthy energy-boosting meal instead by packing your children food such as nuts (or peanut butter sandwiches) – nuts are an excellent source of energy and are rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Other options include oatmeal, vegetables, milk, eggs as they are high in protein and vitamins and an essential nutrient that aids brain development and waterwatermelon or citrus fruits,” Kulani added.

He concluded by saying rushed parents should limit the amount of times they give their children money to buy sweets at the school tuck shop. “The children will end up buying food that is not good for their health which can lead to exhaustion and a lack of concentration.”
