Life in the ghetto inspires SSG’s music
Labelled the 'Four Horsemen of Rap', childhood friends Domino, Dollaman, Genesis and Otys from Seshego, formed the hip hop group SSG.
POLOKWANE – The group say they are aiming at encouraging the youth to never stop dreaming through their music.
Lebo ‘Dommino’ Kgofelo, Pius ‘Dollaman’ Chauke, Tumelo ‘Genesis’ Mashabela and Ottis ‘Otys’ Kolobe recently released their Grand Design mixtape with singles such as Slala, Tswere Zaka, Kgosi, Kasi, Dipatje Dia Betha and Ba Tshaba making waves.
SSG fall under the Hip Hop, Rap and the Trap North Ghetto Sound genres and have global influence with their raw, street unique lyrical delivery.
“We basically grew up together, went to the same schools and had the same taste in music and from that, SSG was born. We are inspired by rappers such as NWA, Dr Dre, Jay Z, KRS1, Nas, Tuks, Skwatta Kamp, H20, Cassper Nyovest, Migos and AKA to name a few,” Dommino told Review.
SSG was officially formed in 2015 when the four members relocated to Polokwane after completing their studies in Gauteng. They decided to combine their individual musical experience and skill to form a movement that would inspire youth and other aspiring musicians in the community and province, hence the name SSG (Seshego).
SSG combines a blend of rap, kwaito, house music, jazz, contemporary blues, electro and rock and roll, which is the type of music they grew up listening to. They influence their type of music with a unique melody and slang, which allows for a freestyle niche to their music content.”
SSG says they rap in English and vernac because they cater for a versatile audience and try and make their fans from Limpopo feel extra special by rapping in their mother tongue first and foremost before introducing other languages.
“The content in our music is influenced by life in the ghetto, where we come from as a firsthand experience and from other townships,” added Dollaman.
SSG host monthly events at popular spots around Polokwane including CatchupZone, Shortleft, Sidedish, Kalawa, Sweetpops, Bluemoon, Experia among others where they perform songs from their mixtape.
SSG’s main aim as musicians is to take over the music scene in Southern Africa as well as internationally by creating and maintaining a musical relationship with other musicians from across the globe.
