N1 safe for travellers after police arrest suspects

The two suspects have been harassing travellers on the N1 between Mookgopong and Polokwane in recent months.

MOKOPANE – Travellers can now feel safe after they have been harassed by criminals on the N1 between Mookgopong and Polokwane in recent months.

The Mokopane police nabbed two suspects on Friday 28 July on the N1 south for robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal immigrants and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Sgt Irene Masingi, Spokesperson for the Mokopane police said: “According to a complainant, him and his colleague stopped along the said road. Unknown men approached the vehicle from behind and pointed a firearm at them, they pulled the car key out of the ignition.

“The complainant’s colleague shot one of the suspects and they managed to escape unharmed.”

According to Masingi the complainant contacted the Mokopane Police Station and with the help of the police officers on duty, they managed to arrest two suspects along the N1.

The third suspect escaped.

The arrested suspect Trust Dube (26) appeared in Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 July and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 14 August.

The case against the second suspect Brighton Gama (31) was brought before the court in his absence, the suspect is in the hospital under police guard. Police are still looking for the third suspect.

Station Commander of Mokopane Police Station, Col Isaac Mantjane applauded the police officers on the breakthrough and on the arrest of the suspects.

“The terrorising and robbing of travellers the past few months on the N1 was a challenge for the police. We hope these suspects will be put away for good.”
