Phalaborwa dealership robbery: Suspected leader arrested at court

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit arrested a 31-year-old at the Westgate Magistrate’s Court whilst he was appearing for another case of motor vehicle theft.

LIMPOPO – According to Provincial Hawks Spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, the suspect is believed to have led a syndicate in which a fleet of new Ford Ranger cars were stolen at a car dealership in Phalaborwa in December 2017.

Two suspects, aged 31 and 26-years-old, who are believed to be part of the alleged syndicate, were arrested in January and charged for possession of suspected motor vehicles.

“One suspect was granted R3 000 bail while the other was remanded in custody until 2 May 2018,” Maluleke explained.

Five of the six stolen vehicles were recovered at the Limpopo River near Beitbridge and they were intercepted before crossing the border.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear today, before the Masisi Magistrate’s Court, to face charges of burglary at business premises as well as several counts of motor vehicle theft.

“Investigations will continue and additional arrests have not been ruled out,” Maluleke concluded.
